Gifted students are also special educational needs students!

Abstract

In the Netherlands we have found that gifted students are also special educational needs students.
We can identify several types of gifted students. Some are successful, but others struggle a lot during their school period. In many cases these students encounter severe problems. These problems, often behavioral problems or low school results, are not recognized as being caused by their giftedness. Eventually they will drop-out from school if we do not respond to their needs.

In this presentation we will show the characteristics of gifted students, the six types of gifted students you can identify, which solutions are found in the Netherlands to deal with their needs. We will show the characteristics a program for the gifted students should have. We will end the presentation showing a program for gifted students which will be piloted at a primary school and lead to new research: do gifted students by the blended learning methodology for Chinese language learning ‘learn how to learn’, one of the aims of a gifted students’ program?
