Model-based Mathematics Teaching for University Savant Students
Abstract
Savant students demonstrate profound and prodigious abilities far in excess of what would be considered normal. Savant skills are often found in calendar calculation, mathematics, and spatial skills. It was reported about 50% of savants are autistic and often savant students have social and communication difficulties. There are savant students in universities. But conventional methods available in university education may not be suitable for their learning. This talk will share some of our initial efforts to help savant students in mathematics learning. More specifically, we will propose to apply modeling and visualization technique assisting savant students better learning mathematics and at the same time better communicating with their lecturers and classmates.
